Event Details

You're invited to Gogobot.com's first ever Travel Salon, an intimate gathering of writers and travelers for the 21st Century. Talk travel and the digital world, meet fellow travelers and writers, and win the chance to become a paid writer for our blog! Your $12 ticket gets you a drink ticket, tamale dinner, and entry into the door prize contest.

What:
Travel writers have shaped our time on the road since the advent of Baedeker’s, but that’s all changing. These days, *you* are becoming travel writers, through your blogs, online reviews, and travel expertise. Join us for a discussion on the Future of Travel Writing with a panel comprised of four travel writers on the front lines of the digital travel revolution. The panel will discuss where they think the world of travel is headed, and will be moderated by Gogobot CEO Travis Katz. Later, get up close with the writers in smaller group discussions on their area of expertise.

Win:
See your work published on Gogobot! Send us a link to two of your best Gogobot reviews. We will pick one user who is present at the Salon to write a blog post for our blog. To enter, email links to your two Gogobot reviews with "Travel Salon Entry" as the subject to editor@gogobot.com by April 8, 2012. On the night, we’ll also have a door prize for a night’s stay at the Best Western El Rancho Inn, where you can park and spend the night near SFO the night before your next big adventure (a $150 value!).

Panelists:

Alex Leviton
Alex Leviton is the Editorial Director for Gogobot. She began her travel writing career with a $50 article about Northern Ireland in her neighborhood newspaper in 1998, and has gone on to contribute to 25 titles for Lonely Planet. Recently, she’s written an iPhone app, an article about Umbria for BBC.com, and the intro for Lonely Planet’s Happy, but she most enjoys mentoring soon-to-be travel writers.

Broke-Ass Stuart (aka Stuart Schuffman)
Broke-Ass Stuart started out in 2005, writing a zine for getting around San Francisco on the
cheap. Within a few years, he had amassed a media empire that includes three books (Broke-Ass Stuart’s Guide to Living Cheaply in San Francisco and New York, and to living cheaply in general), a television show on IFC, a website, and a social media following on Facebook and Twitter.

Michael McColl
Ecotourism and adventure travel expert Michael McColl is the founding editor of The Green Hotels Institute (set to launch in 2012).  He is a co-founder of EthicalTraveler.org, and a founding writer of the Fodor's UpClose travel guidebook series. His work has been published widely, and he’s a frequent travel expert guest on TV and radio. Michael has visited over 50 countries on all seven continents.

Erin Robin Caslavka
From the days when she lived with her father on the island of Crete, to the summer she spent as an exchange student in Ireland, Erin has made traveling a part of her life. Rock climbing outside Flagstaff, dog sledding in Quebec, and attending a Celtic music festival are some of her favorite travel memories. You can read many of her articles on ArkandTent.com, and some recent contributions at SFGate.com (penned for the San Francisco Chronicle).
